Phil Foden is one of the brightest prospects in football. It is not every day you get to be praised by Pep Guardiola as the most talented player he has ever seen. Guardiola has coached big players like Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, and many more talents over the years but called Phil Foden the most talented. Surprising isn’t it?
While Foden should not be compared to the greats that Pep Guardiola has coached, watching him play makes you understand why he has received so much praise from Guardiola. Since the departure of David Silva, it is good that the club has not signed another midfielder who would have reduced the game time of Phil Foden.
However, while it is clear that Guardiola already knows the kind of talent he possesses, Foden should be given a chance to start more games. While the likes of Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez are also brilliant players, it is clear that Phil Foden has the talent to surpass their ceiling. Foden’s determination and willingness are always a great sight to see as he always wants the ball and is very versatile.
He also gives a brilliant performance irrespective of the position he is playing on the field. Phil Foden has a style of play that may sometimes remind you of how Frank Lampard used to play. Foden’s well-timed runs are raw beauty and his long-range drives into the bottom corner of the net show how matured he has become.
When playing on the wings, he knows fully well when to drop inside and create space for his teammates. His understanding of football is very special for his age. It is also nice to see that his finishing is good as unlike some other youngsters, he is not confused when he has his eyes on the goal.
Foden needs to start more especially in the big games and playing alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and Fernandinho would help polish his lack of experience and make him better as well.
