It’s now official that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has now been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). With that, there are 11 things you need to know about the DG of WTO as she would be beginning her Era as the WTO DG.

Hours ago, the WTO announced on their official Twitter handle that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is now the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. They also revealed that she would be beginning her Era as the DG on March 1st, 2020.

WTO tweet reads,

“BREAKING: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General.

“Dr. Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO.

“Here term starts on the 1st of March, 2021.

The WTO then also said again,

“WTO members took the decision to appoint @NOIweala at a special meeting of the General Council following a selection process that included eight candidates from around the world #WTODG.”

With that, we now acknowledge the fact that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is now the New DG of The World Trade Organization.

11 Things You Need To Know About Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala As The New Director-General of World Trade Organization

1. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was born on the 13th of June, 1954

2. konjo-Iweala was born in Ogwashi-Ukwu, Delta State, Nigeria

3. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is currently part of the boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), African Risk Capacity (ARC), and Twitter

4. She worked at the World Bank for 25 years as a development economist scaling the ranks to the number 2 position as Managing Director, Operations from 2007-2011

5. Okonjo-Iweala was the former Managing Director of The World Bank (2007)

6. She was the first female Finance Minister in Nigeria (2003)

7. She was the first female Euromoney Global Finance Minister (2005)

8. She is now the newly appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization with her Era commencing from March 1, 2021.

9. She is the first African woman to be the first Director-General of the WTO

10. She is the first woman to be the Director General of the World Trade Organization

11. She is the black person to rule the World Trade Organization
