Mesut Ozil is set to leave Arsenal as his role has drastically reduced in the squad. The arrival of the January transfer window meant that the German international would be free to negotiate with other clubs and he is now set to move to his boyhood club, Fenerbahce.
Ozil has not played for Arsenal during the 2020/2021 season as Mikel Arteta has stated that this is largely due to his lack of performances in training. Speculations were made about Ozil returning to the club to solve Arsenal’s problem of lacking a creative midfielder but the German international seemed to have been completely left out of the squad.
The Athletic states that Ozil has agreed to forgo a chunk of his remaining wages so that his move to Fenerbahce can be completed.
Ozil, earlier this week expressed his desire to move to Fenerbahce as he likened the club to Real Madrid, claiming that it is the biggest club in his country.
“If I went to Turkey, I could only go to Fenerbahce. I grew up as a Fenerbache fan as a kid. Every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up was Germany. And mine is Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in my country,” Ozil said.
