Barcelona star, Lionel Messi could face a lengthy match ban after he was adjudged to have punched an opponent in Barcelona’s loss against Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final.

The Argentine punched Asier Villalibre in an encounter that so he gets a red card in the last minute of the match. Barcelona was going to launch what looked like the final attack as Messi, who was on the ball spread it to Jordi Alba on the left-wing. However, the Argentine was delayed from reaching the box in time for a potential cut-back from Alba which made Messi infuriated as he hit the Bilbao player.

Messi is now at risk of missing up to 12 matches. If the Spanish FA deem the incident as being ‘aggressive’, Messi could miss between 4-12 games. The red card he received was the first during his years at Barcelona.

Barcelona would have to look further than the Super Cup loss and focus on Thursday when they face Cornella in the Copa Del Rey. The Blaugrana still have a chance of winning the La Liga, Champions League, and Copa Del Rey.
