Liverpool has had their defensive woes worsened after central defender Joel Matip was forced off at halftime due to an injury in Thursday evening’s match against Tottenham. Liverpool won the match 3-1 as Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to form as he scored a goal and provided an assist for Sadio Mane’s goal.
However, with the reality of Joel Matip’s injury, there are no fit senior central defenders for Sunday’s trip to West Ham. Virgil Van Dijk was injured in October last year during the Mersey Side derby following a rough tackle from Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Joe Gomez and Fabinho are also injured which gives Jurgen Klopp a selection headache ahead of West Ham’s game on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp has discussed the possibility of signing a new center back in the January transfer window but admits that no club would be willing to sell their top center back.
“I am not sure there is an £80 million center available at the moment and a club thinks ‘We can get £80 million from him so we will sell him.’
I don’t think that’s the case. Actually, pretty much I know. This caliber of player the teams would not sell them now,” Jurgen Klopp said.
Liverpool’s 3-1 victory against Tottenham pushed them back to the top 4 positions but they would have to keep the momentum to have a real chance at the Premier League title.
