Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Belgian forward Eden Hazard in 2019 but he has been plagued with constant injuries and fitness problems since he arrived in the Spanish capital. Hazard was bought from Chelsea for 100 million euros, a fee which could rise to 150 million euros based on additional bonuses.
Hazard was reported to turn up for training looking overweight and out of shape during his first pre-season at Real Madrid after a holiday with the Spanish media attacking him for supposed lack of professionalism. In addition to that, his consistent injuries have led to fans’ backlash against him.
Former Chelsea winger Damien Duff has criticized Eden Hazard over his fitness issues, stating that the Belgian international has never been in the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Duff, while speaking with Irish outlet RTE said;
“You’d worry for him going forward. He is 30, he relies on sharpness, being a quick dribble, we all know after 30 it’s downhill. He’s never been a top pro and he’s never had the drive of Messi and Ronaldo.
If he did, you’d probably be mentioning him with the two players. He turned up for his first pre-season at Real Madrid overweight. Fat. Call it what you want.”
Eden Hazard had the opportunity to go against some of his former teammates at Chelsea earlier in the week during Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea. He was brought on as a second-half substitute but it had little effect on the scoreline leaving the tie with everything to play for in the second leg
