The football world was rocked by the news of the introduction of the European Super League whereby some top clubs across Europe would refuse to play under UEFA again and would form a league of their own called the European Super League. The European Super League is expected to have 12 founding members which are the “Big Six” English clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Milan.
However, UEFA has strongly kicked against the idea of the European Super League as it has issued a threat that Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Chelsea are going to be banned from participating in this season’s Champions League despite having already progressed to the Semi-finals of the competition.
Besides, UEFA and FIFA have threatened that any player who participates in the European Super League would be banned from participating in international matches for their countries and this includes the Euros and the World Cup.
According to the independent, the head of the Danish FA, Moller has stated that he expects Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid to be kicked out of the UEFA Champions League on Friday, 23 March 2021.
